Olds resident Troy Johnstone got some fabulous shots of the total solar eclipse while vacationing with his family.

He put them together in a composite photo. It progresses from a shot of the whole moon to the moon totally obscuring the sun and back to the total moon again.

Knowing the eclipse, which occurred Aug. 21, would be happening this year, Johnstone made arrangements during the winter to camp at a property outside Douglas, Wyoming. He says about 30 people were camped out there altogether.

He set up a couple of telescopes, camera and associated equipment in order to view it and get the shot.

"It was a really spectacular event," Johnstone says. "I've had an interest in astronomy since I was a kid but this was my first total solar eclipse."

Johnstone and his wife Naomi have three kids, Ellie, 12, Adeline,10 and Ethan, 8.

He made sure he and they could watch the eclipse safely.

"The kids had the standard cardboard eyeglasses," he said.

The telescopes were also outfitted for it via what's known as a "sun funnel," which projects the image through a different eyepiece so it ended up being shown much like a shot on a screen from a projector.
