OLDS — Firefighters are continuing to investigate a structure fire in town that broke out on Halloween day but at the moment, the belief is it occurred accidentally, Olds Fire Department Chief Justin Andrew says.

The fire occurred at a single family home at 42 Vantage Cres.

The call came in to the fire hall at 2:09 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Sixteen firefighters responded with two engines, a ladder truck and a support unit, along with ambulance (EMS) personnel. They found the fire in a garage attached to the home, according to a press release issued yesterday.

While the firefighters were battling the fire, the fire department confirms a small explosion occurred which blew out the garage windows.

A single male occupant who was in the garage at the time of the incident suffered serious burns to his body, according to the fire department.

He was treated by ambulance personnel and transported to hospital.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the area of the garage.

“Extensive overhaul operations were required to ensure that the spread of the fire had not extended into the house and common attic spaces,” the news release says.
