The Olds Midget Mustangs blasted the opposition in two games on the weekend, outscoring the Drayton Valley Midget B team 15-2 on Friday at home and then travelling to Stettler where they beat the Midget B team 15-1 in North Central Minor Hockey Association play.
Special teams were working well for the Mustangs on Friday, scoring seven power-play goals and a short-handed marker.
"We worked on our power play this week in practice and we Ö worked on just simplifying it a bit,î coach Joel Hunter said, adding that in the past few games he felt the team was passing it around too much, trying to get a shot from the slot.
"The guys were just shooting the puck, instead of trying to force the pass through four guys (through the middle),î he said.
Both Colton Weseen and Rhett Couture got hat tricks for the Mustangs. Hunter said the two played a physical game early, which allowed them more space later on.
"They kind of played with an edge where they used their bodies and they threw some hits to open up some ice Ö and most of the time the Drayton team Ö just kind of backed off. Any time you play physical like that it's going to work out well for you,î he said.
In Stettler, while many Mustangs had multiple-point games, Tyson Schmidt led the way with two goals and four assists. Matt Lowry, the team's assistant coach, said he played well, especially on the forecheck.
"He played strong, he forechecked hard,î he said.
Lowry said the Mustangs came out of the gate a little slow before finding their stride.
"About seven, eight minutes in, they were actually all over us, before we picked it up. Once we got a few goals it opened the floodgates,î he said.
The Mustangs outshot Stettler 73-18.
