OLDS — Infrastructure director Adrian Pedro says it may be “a little tricky” for the Town of Olds to buy Canadian.
Pedro made that statement in response to a question from Coun. Dan Daley during town council’s March 10 meeting.
On March 5, Premier Danielle Smith announced that the provincial government will require all its departments and agencies, including Crown corporations, school boards, as well as municipalities, to buy supplies and services from businesses in Alberta, Canada or other countries that Canada has a free trade agreement with.
In light of that announcement, Daley asked what the Town of Olds is doing to follow that directive.
“Has the Town of Olds looked into this, and have they made a plan going forward as to changing suppliers, changing our procurement methods to align with the provincial government’s,” he asked.
“We haven't had extensive discussions on that,” Pedro said.
“A lot of our products, it's kind of a mixed bag, depending where (they) come from.
“We certainly buy from local vendors and distributors, but yeah, I think it would take a more holistic look to determine where things come from, and it's really going to be dependent on the parts that we need, whether they're manufactured in Canada or not, which could be a little tricky.”
