There are more bare upper lips in Olds following the conclusion of the first-ever Movember challenge last week. Participants from the Olds Fire Department and Mountain View Publishing ceremoniously got their moustaches shaved off on Wednesday with the help of stylists from Uptown Hair Design.
The three participating teams raised $9,116 for men's cancers, with the 18 members from the Olds Fire Cookie Dusters raising a total of $5,550 while the 12 participants from Mountain View Men raised $2,420. The RCMP team, Constable 'Stache, raised $1,146.
Lorne Thompson, chief of the Olds Fire Department, said the fire department had a secret ace in the hole with Lynn Roberts raising $1,500 alone. He then shaved his moustache that he had worn for the last 32 years.
“How can you compete against that? The community stepped up, family and friends really came forward to support him and the program. But all in all everybody here had a good time doing it,” he said.
“Between the three organizations … raising almost $10,000, I think that goes a long way to say how important this is,” Thompson said.
As a result of the challenge between the Olds RCMP and Olds Fire Department, Const. Aaron Bartsch will be making a speech at the fire department's Christmas party, talking about the virtues of the latter organization.
