A Good Samaritan helped RCMP find a muddy 41-year-old Olds man, suspected of being involved in a lengthy stolen vehicle chase that ended in a creek.
On Aug. 14 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Airdrie RCMP were alerted by a Calgary Police Service HAWCS helicopter to a stolen Ford F-350 being driven northbound on Highway 2 into Airdrie’s area.
Police said “the truck was being driven in an extremely dangerous manner on highways and through fields and rural properties.”
It turned eastbound through Rocky View County and into the Beiseker area.
Airdrie RCMP said they were able to disable the truck using three separate spike belts and it came to rest in a creek just northwest of Acme.
The lone suspect quickly exited the vehicle and fled on foot, according to police.
“RCMP Police Dog Services made attempts to track the suspect through the rough, wet terrain but, the suspect was able to get away from Police,” said Airdrie Const. Dan Martin in a press release.
The next morning at approximately 10 a.m., Beiseker RCMP began to receive several calls about a suspicious male covered in mud, wandering around the rural areas, asking for directions and a ride.
“Callers also explained to RCMP that it looked like he had slept outside all night. A Good Samaritan even picked up the male who began to explain that he had driven his truck into a creek,” said Martin .
“The male was eventually dropped off at a restaurant in Linden where he was conveniently located by Beiseker RCMP.”
The man was remanded into custody and will appear in provincial court in Airdrie on Aug. 23.
Martin said the man’s name and charges aren’t being released at this time.
