Museum dealing with water seepage

The museum has been dealing with water seeping through its wall into the basement, where artifacts are stored.

Chief operating officer Doug Wagstaff told council on Oct. 24 that the museum's basement wall is made of river rock, which can be permeable to water.

"We're looking at different options to see what might be able to be done there," he said in a later interview. "There doesn't appear to be any mould issues but certainly moisture in a museum isn't ideal."

The museum is a heritage building, the former Alberta Government Telephones building, opened in 1920. Wagstaff said different options are being carefully considered to fix the seepage.

He said they'll also want to avoid disturbing the garden located east of the museum in order to dig along the wall – if needed.

"There's a lot of volunteer efforts that have been put into that garden, developing and upkeeping it. We want to try some things before removing that," he said.
