OLDS — Donations to the Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society (MVESS) for Kirsten’s Place, the emergency shelter currently under construction in Olds, have reached close to $1 million, president Joe Carignan estimates.

“It sounds like a lot, but the cost of the building with fencing and security will put us close to the $1 million we have raised,” Carignan wrote in an email.

“We have to still look at driveway and parking lot (construction) as well as landscaping. I don’t have a cost for those as of yet, but we are working with a couple people/companies on getting pricing.

“We will then need to raise money for operating costs. We are still working on estimating what that will cost.”

Carignan said construction of the facility, at the junction of 50th Avenue and 54th Street in Olds, is “coming along with still lots to do.” “The exterior is mostly done and now they will start working on the interior,” he wrote.

When ground was initially broken for the shelter on May 1, Carignan predicted construction would be complete late this fall.
