OLDS — École Olds High School (ÉOHS) will be in good hands this fall as Meaghan Reist becomes its new principal, Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD) superintendent Kurt Sacher says.
Reist replaces Tom Christensen, who is retiring this spring after a 38-year career including 22 years as principal of ÉOHS.
Reist has had a lengthy career in the Chinook’s Edge School Division, serving in many roles, including vice-principal at Bowden Grandview School and this year as acting principal of École Deer Meadow School.
She also has a special place in her heart for ÉOHS, where she not only graduated, but also served as a student leader.
During an interview, Sacher said a special Chinook’s Edge team was struck to determine who Christensen’s successor would be.
"As a group, it was just hands-down unanimous support for Meaghan Riest. She’s got tremendous talent and she’s going to have a very impactful career,” Sacher said.
“Her heart and her mind is with Olds High. That was very clear to the hiring committee, that she has a tremendous passion for Olds High.
“She’s taught there, she knows many of the folks. She knows the community. She’s had diverse experience as a V.P. and K to 12 out at Bowden.”
Not only has Reist been a strong administrator in her various roles as vice-principal and principal, but she was also a “master teacher” over the years when she taught at ÉOHS, Sacher added.
As a result of all that history and experience, including her time as an ÉOHS student “for Tom, it’s like giving the business over to your daughter,” Sacher said.
“The vice-principals that are there right now are strong; it’s a strong staff. They will help Meaghan learn and make the transition to Olds High.
"With Meaghan’s talent, combined with their support, Olds High will continue to fly, and Tom has set it up that way; great leaders do that. And so we’re proud of Tom and we’re very proud of Meaghan as well, as she’s going to be great.”
However, should Reist need any help from the CESD central office, they’ll be there for her, Sacher added.
