OLDS — Town council has approved spending a total $82,000 at the Sportsplex to obtain a new score clock and to repaint the floors with an epoxy floor coating.

Council made the decision during its March 27 meeting.

Chief administrative officer Brent Williams confirmed both projects will be covered by the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) a provincial government grant.

Thus, Williams said, the cost of the new clock and painting are “expense neutral.”

“The score clock in the main arena at the Sportsplex is unable to be repaired because the model is discontinued and parts can no longer be ordered,” a Request For Decision (RFD) in council’s agenda package said.

“The replacement score clock will include the new score clock, wireless control and receiver, installation, and freight.”

“We have quoted a new score clock with almost the same footprint, as we would not have to change the structure (added cost) to fit a new clock.

“The new score clock as quoted would also include a shot counter on the board.

“We have been informed lead time for orders currently is three to four months, so time is of the essence for us to move forward with this to have it in place by next hockey season, limiting any disruption to users,” the RFD said.

The cost for that new clock is pegged at $22,000.

Council also approved a request from administrative staff to apply an epoxy coating to the floors in the facility. The cost of that project is estimated to be $60,000.

A motion to approve the projects passed unanimously.

The town’s 2023 capital budget is now pegged at $7,249,455.
