OLDS — The public will be informed when Olds RCMP are close to receiving and wearing body-worn cameras, says Staff Sgt. Warren Wright, the detachment’s commanding officer.

Wright made that statement during a recent town council meeting, saying he anticipates the detachment will likely receive those cameras in February or March.

He told Mayor Judy Dahl that when the date of receiving those cameras comes close, officials at K Division, the RCMP head office in Edmonton, will send out an information package about them that will also be available through social media and on their website.

Wright said that information will “definitely be released” and will give residents an idea of “how it works and what we do.”

Coun. Heather Ryan wondered how what she described as the “consultation” with the public will work and how long it will last.

“We won’t be doing, necessarily, individual consultation. It will be rolled out, there will be a media package and everything will be through Edmonton,” Wright said.

“So how long it will be open for or how long it will take, I would imagine it’s again, sort of in advance of them being initiated, when we’re starting to wear them.

“I would imagine it would probably be a couple of weeks (after) they send them out and then they may stay on the social media and website for quite some time after that. Just a matter of advertising,” he said.
