Four Grade 10 students from Olds High School will be leaving on May 10 to Windsor, Ont., for the Canada Wide Science Fair.
Madison Fleming and Cali Wright were selected after the regional science fair in Red Deer for their project, "Bacteria in Ice." Janine Nel and Taylor Ormann will join them with theirs titled, "Testing Antimicrobial Properties of Saliva."
Also attending from Olds is Emma Hoppins, a Grade 7 student from Ecole Deer Meadow School.
Food, housing and the flight will all be paid for.
"I'm so excited. I'm trying to plan it all out," Fleming said about the trip. "There's so many different spots you want to go to. It's like we have to go here, here, here, here."
Ormann had a more measured reaction to the news that she too would be flying to Ontario.
"We were kind of excited but sort of not excited at the same time because you miss a week of school and you don't want to miss a week of school," she said. "We don't want to miss a week of school. Normal people do."
There were only six plane tickets up for grabs at the regional fair. Neither group thought that four would end up in their hands.
"I wasn't even planning to go in the science fair. She wanted to," said Nel about her partner Ormann.
Ormann said she expects steep competition at nationals. But she's more interested in enjoying the experience and learning from other contestants.
"We just really want to have fun while we're there," she said. "Some kids really do focus and they try ridiculously hard but we're just really proud that we made the achievement to get there."
