OLDS — The Mountain View Emergency Shelter Society (MVESS) has received another big cheque.

The Alberta Royal Purple Association (ARPA) recently presented the society with a cheque for $20,000.

The ARPA had envisioned that the money would go toward furniture and appliances for Kirsten’s Place, the society's emergency shelter currently under construction in Olds.

However, society secretary Carol Johnston says it may end up going toward a children’s play centre.

ARPA treasurer Ida Jorgensen says the organization is OK with that idea too.

Jorgensen told the Albertan that the ARPA’s mission is to foster awareness about brain injuries and help prevent them from occurring in the first place.

“Included in that brain injury focus is emergency shelters, because there are so many people who come into emergency shelters who potentially could have a brain injury from the situation that they’re in,” Jorgensen said.

“The numbers are really, really high, so that’s why we support emergency shelters as well.”

Shelter society treasurer Bill Johnston says about $30,000 has been raised specifically for furnishing “with additional commitments that haven't been fulfilled yet.”

At the time, a fundraising program for furnishing had not started yet.
