The talent of the Olds Community Chorus has attracted the attention of a concert producer in New York.
Chorus president Derek Lewis was contacted recently by a representative of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY).
The representative had been searching the Internet and discovered the 2017 Olds Community Chorus Spring Concert on YouTube.
Being very impressed with the quality of the singing in the Olds Community TV- recorded video, chorus members said the rep invited them to participate in a mass choir performance at New York's Lincoln Centre at the end of May 2018.
"It's quite the feather in our cap," said past-president and chorus member Grant Spence.
Preparation for the event would require extensive practice of a major work -- Carmina Burana -- at home, so that upon arrival in New York they would be prepared to join the rest of the 200 or so singers from choirs invited to perform.
While it sounded almost too good to be true, Spence said after some checking, they determined it was no hoax.
Regardless, the chorus decided to decline as a group because the timing conflicts with the spring concert the chorus puts on in early May.
There are, however, individuals who may still go and represent the chorus.
Chorus members say they were honoured to be invited to the event and be recognized for the high quality of singing they produce.
The spring concert can be viewed by searching YouTube Olds Community Chorus.
The chorus is currently practising for its winter concerts to be held on Dec. 7 at 7:30 at the Zion Evangelical Missionary Church in Didsbury, and Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Olds First Baptist Church.
