Olds College invites town and county residents to come to an open house on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Trans-Canada Theatre to share ideas for its upcoming centennial.
"We are now one year away from the centennial. It will soon be here,î said Kerry T. Moynihan, general manager for the 2013 centennial.
"We really want to make this a grand celebration because the college has a grand tradition of being around for 100 years and had a great impact on providing learning opportunities for rural Albertans and Canadians.î
Among its roster of centennial activities, which includes a fashion show at the Trans-Canada Theatre and the World Plowing Championships, the college thought it would be a good idea to have an event that would be a town and county celebration of the centennial.
"The college has been an integral component of the county and the town for 100 years,î said Moynihan.
"Rather than impose ideas on people, we thought we would have an open house to brainstorm and ask people how they want to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the college.î
Everything about the event is up for discussion.
"Do people want a parade? Do they want fireworks? Do they want entertainment?î asked Moynihan.
After the open house, the committee will work with the college, town, and county to plan the event.
"We tentatively have set a date in June 2013 but that is tentative,î said Moynihan.
The college will also use the open house to share with residents what is already planned for the centennial, so that people know what to expect.
"We are pretty much firm now on most of the events and the timing,î said Moynihan.
"We have been planning the centennial for two and half years, considering the budget is in the area of about $4 million.î
