OLDS - Olds RCMP is investigating the theft of a number of bronze plaques detailing the historical significance of the buildings and areas of Olds they were stolen from.
It’s believed that sometime between the overnight hours of Tuesday, Oct. 19 and the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 20, eight plaques were stolen from a variety of locations in the downtown area of Olds RCMP Const. Morley Statchuk said in a press release issued yesterday (Oct. 22).
“Each of these plaques have significant value in describing the history of the building they were attached to and are part of the town of Olds historic downtown,” Statchuk wrote.
The plaques are part of the Olds Historical Signage Program administered by the Town of Olds, Olds Communities in Bloom Committee and Olds Historical Society.
The high-quality, bronze plaques feature a historical photograph and a description about the location, which is mounted on the building or a stand-alone platform. Many are located in the town's downtown, also known as Uptowne Olds.
One of the stolen plaques is the first sign installed as part of the program on the AGT Building, now part of the Mountain View Museum & Archives at 5038 50th Street, in July of 2007.
Plaques were also stolen from locations including the Rip's Audio Video & Spas building, Craig’s Store and Centennial Park.

Olds RCMP is asking the public to come forward with any information related to these incidents.
