Contraband cigarettes and a variety of controlled substances were seized from a hotel room on Sept. 1.

OLDS - An Olds man is facing numerous drug charges after police seized what is believed to be fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine and more than 600 contraband cigarettes at an Olds hotel on Sept. 1, police said Tuesday.

Jacob Donkin, 25, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking related to the drugs, mischief and two provincial offences related to the cigarettes.

On Aug. 31 Olds RCMP attended a room at the hotel as part of an ongoing drug investigation, RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said in a release issued Sept. 17.

“Officers engaged with the room occupant, at which time they were invited into the room. Once inside the room, officers observed a quantify of what they believed to be fentanyl,” she said.

The male occupant of the room was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The following day, the Olds RCMP crime reduction unit, Olds RCMP, Didsbury RCMP, along with the RCMP’s clandestine laboratory enforcement and response team, executed a search warrant on the room.

Police seized about 560 grams of suspected fentanyl, just under 100 grams of suspected cocaine, 12 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 680 contraband cigarettes, and other items often used when drug trafficking, she said.

Police are using the word ‘suspected’ when describing the drugs because the items have not yet been confirmed to be narcotics through laboratory testing, Slaney told the Albertan.

Donkin has been granted interim release and is scheduled to be in Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Oct. 21.

“Drug enforcement continues to be a priority for the Olds RCMP to ensure safety and security of the public,” she said. “We will continue to work in partnership with other agencies, and members of the public to ensure that we deal aggressively with drugs and drug dealers in our community.”
