OLDS — Five players from the Olds Amateur Football Association (OAFA) made the lives of local veterans a little brighter by serving them a meal Oct. 30 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105.
Most were members of the bantam Bulldogs, but one was a member of the peewee Huskies.
Sheila Peters, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105 in Olds, says a football parent who volunteers at the branch suggested some players might be willing to do that.
They were.
“They did an excellent job,” Peters said. “The vets really enjoyed them and they enjoyed it.”
She said in addition to serving the meals, the players got a chance to chat with some of the vets and vice versa.
“They poured their coffee and tea and (brought) dessert and everything," she said. “They did they do a great job.”
OAFA president Doug Rieberger said this marks the first time the association has done this for the branch, but it worked out so well they’d be happy to do so again.
He said the OAFA has often volunteered for other groups in town, many of which support the football association.
Rieberger said volunteering is good for the players.
“It helps with the community aspect of what we’re doing. It helps them with interacting with different groups and that,” he said.
“And on the other side of it is it usually helps out a bit with some of the (association’s) fundraising as well.”
Rieberger said if the branch requires help in the future, the OAFA would be glad to assist in any way they can.
