OLDS - The inception of eight outdoor skating rinks in town has given ample opportunity for area residents to get in some ice time while arenas are closed due to pandemic restrictions.
In mid-December, the municipality teamed up with the Olds Fire Department to pilot the creation of the skating surfaces at parks, ball diamonds and other areas throughout town.
Town officials reasoned at the time that "COVID-19 has been tough on everyone and the Town of Olds was looking for outdoor activities that residents can safely enjoy with their families."
The response from the community was immediate with kudos going out to both the town and fire department members who flooded the rinks and periodically continue to do so.
Community members have been out clearing snow off the surfaces that feature snow-banked edges but no boards.
Users are strongly encouraged to adhere to COVID-19 public health measures, and all skaters are to obey posted signage relevant to ice safety and use the ice surface at their own risk.
