OLDS — This year’s pop-up waste transfer station and yard waste dump in Olds will likely operate a little differently than last year, infrastructure director Adrian Pedro says.
Both services were provided last year at the Operations Centre, located on 70th Avenue. Pedro previously said he anticipates they will be offered yearly.
During town council’s March 10 meeting, Pedro said the pop-up waste transfer station could operate for three days as it did last year or staff could “modify” it.
“I won't spoil it as to which direction we're going in, but I'd like to see the program be a little bit more efficient,” Pedro said. “There were times last year where it was pretty slow for certain hours of the days.
“So just streamlining that so it's more efficient for us internally and better availability for the public as well.”
Coun. Darren Wilson asked what the plan is for the yard waste dump.
“The intent is to offer similar program as we did last year. Same comment as the pop-up transfer station. There were some inefficiencies, so we're just looking to streamline those,” Pedro said.
“We had many days where it there were low, low times, and so it was inefficient for us to have a staff member sitting out there for many hours. So just looking at how we can work around that and make it more efficient for both sides.”
Wilson also asked if the yard waste dump could be available to residents for a longer period this year, perhaps until at least Thanksgiving.
“For sure, and I appreciate that comment,” Pedro said. “That's one of the many things that we have on our list. We want to be accommodating for people, and we understand the needs in the fall.”
