OLDS — Olds RCMP are warning residents to watch out for jewelry fraud occurring in the area.
“Suspects have been known to approach people in parking lots, gas stations, or other public locations typically offering ‘gold jewelry’ for sale that can be given as gifts, or offer to trade for fuel,” a recent news release says.
“The jewelry is not genuine and is offered at very low prices."
The suspects often say that they have lost their bank card and are unable to access funds to continue their trip and can on occasion be aggressive when approaching people when offering the items for sale.”
RCMP say the suspects typically drive “newer rental vehicles,” possibly domestic model SUVs or high-end German type vehicles such Audi or Mercedes, and sometimes will have children with them.
These suspects may also be involved in the sale of stolen perfumes and colognes.
“These types of incidents can be considered fraud or false pretenses and are criminal offences,” the RCMP release says.
Anyone approached by someone trying to sell gold jewelry it is advised to avoid getting involved and call their local police immediately to report the incident.
If they can, citizens are requested to provide licence plate numbers or any photos of the suspects or vehicles to help with the investigation.
