Olds residents encouraged to be neighbourly

Last week’s heavy rainfall highlighted a problem in the community — some residents aim their downspouts toward their neighbour's property

OLDS — Last week’s heavy rainfall highlighted a problem in the community – neighbours who don’t always act neighbourly, according to operations director Scott Greico.

“Cooperation between neighbours is really what we’re asking residents to do,” Greico said during an interview.

“So if you have neighbouring properties that are adjacent to one another, let’s not be putting downspouts onto the neighbour’s property. We do deal with a lot of – almost like conflict resolution, if you will. That’s not something we want to make a habit of, because we can’t intervene.

“If there’s something against the bylaw however – there are bylaws in place which indicate that you can’t just put your downspouts toward your neighbour’s property.”

However, Greico said if a complaint is laid and it’s deemed worthy to investigate – for example, if it looks like a town bylaw may be contravened – then bylaw officers will be sent to the property to look into the matter.

“Sometimes it’s an educational awareness thing. Other times, if it needs to be escalated, then bylaw would deal with it from there,” he said.
