OLDS — For four days this week, crews plan to undertake a sanitary sewer relining project in Olds.
The work will be undertaken from July 6-9 in four areas. It will enable sewers in those areas to last longer.
On July 6, workers will reline sewers in sections of Shannon Drive and Shannon Close.
Then on July 7, they’ll reline sanitary sewer pipe underneath 49th Street from 50th Avenue to 53rd Avenue.
On July 8, crews will reline sanitary sewer pipe along 56th Street from 48th Avenue to 49th Avenue as well as a section of 49th Avenue north of 56th Street.
On July 9, sewer relining will be undertaken along 55th Avenue from 44th Street to 43rd Street and along 51st Street from 47th Avenue to 48th Avenue.
This is the second straight year of the relining project. This year, crews will reline 1.34 kilometres of sanitary sewer line. Last year, 1.2 kilometres of sanitary relining was completed.
The contractor, Insituform, will be handing out notices to residents and businesses that will be affected by the work 24 to 48 hours before it begins.
In a release, town officials say as a result of the project, those residents and businesses may experience a loss of sanitary service for a few hours.
“We ask that the use of the sanitary service be limited during these times,” the release says.
Town officials say services upstream and downstream of this work will remain unaffected because the contractor will utilize hydro-vac trucks or bypass pumping to ensure that service continues.
“Residents will notice that the construction process has a strong and unique odour. This odour resembles the smell of vehicle body filler (bondo)," the release says. “This odour is non-toxic and is produced by the resin that is in the liners.”
Town officials say “traffic accommodations” will be in place and residents should expect to see large trucks parked in the centre of the roads affected during the project.
