OLDS — The Olds & District Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards banquet has been postponed to next spring.
Murray Elliott, chair of the Small Business Awards committee, said the committee made that decision during its regular meeting on Oct. 14.
Originally, plans had called for the banquet to be held Oct. 20 at the Olds College Alumni Centre.
Elliott said the decision to postpone the event was made due to slow ticket sales and the fact that major sponsors were “reluctant, to say the least” to have their logos and banners displayed in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said those who did buy tickets will be reimbursed.
“We’re checking into that,” he said.
Winners in the various categories have already been chosen, but Elliott said their names will remain a secret until the awards can presented at a later date.
Elliott admitted the decision to postpone the awards banquet was “a bit of a downer” because the committee had worked very hard to organize it and committee members really felt business people need a special night out after all they’ve been through during the pandemic. However, he said they had little choice, given the circumstances.
