OLDS — During work on sewer infrastructure in the Imperial area of Olds, employees discovered a manhole they didn’t even know existed – in a green space.

“One benefit (of our work) here is that we did remove a buried manhole that nobody knew was there,” Infrastructure director Adrian Pedro told Town of Olds council members recently.

“In that green space, we did find a manhole that was buried, I think, five or six or seven feet or so, and it was taking on water into the manhole.”

By taking in that water, the mysterious manhole was contributing to the town’s ongoing problem with inflow and infiltration. A total of $1.8 million has been set aside in this year’s budget to fight that problem.

“It was logical to get rid of it, because we don't need it, and so we've dealt with that source of infiltration in that line there, so everything went fairly well on that project,” Pedro said.
