Projected cost of 50th Avenue project rises

The projected total cost of the improvements to 50th Avenue between 50th and 52nd streets has risen from about $1.4 millon to about $1.5 millon, according to two Olds town officials.

The projected total cost of the improvements to 50th Avenue between 50th and 52nd streets has risen from about $1.4 millon to about $1.5 millon, according to two Olds town officials.Director of corporate services Garth Lucas and interim director of operational services Scott Chant say the total cost is now expected to be about $1.5 million.Lucas says that's basically because the town has decided to put new lights on both sides of the avenue, instead of just one side, as originally planned. And those new lights will be “heritage” lights, which will look like lights that used to exist in the early decades of the last century.Meanwhile, another issue has occurred. The lights ordered for the project now aren't expected to arrive when first anticipated.“We just got notification that the lights standards are on back order,” Chant says, adding he's not sure when they'll arrive.“We're working with them right now to kind of get that nailed down, but also (figure out) what are some other options.”“We may have to make some different provisions in the meantime,” he says. “They may have to put up the old light standards for a period of time until the new ones get here.”
