Students of …cole Deer Meadow School set up a tent and assorted other materials in the school last week to bring awareness of ShelterBox, an international disaster relief organization.

A ShelterBox is a roundish green box that contains items for people who have lost their home, belongings, and other things due to disaster.

That includes a tent to serve as a temporary shelter as well as other handy items like solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets and cooking utensils.

"We have it at DMS to increase foot traffic and to advocate for disaster relief," Grade 8 teacher Sandi Hoppins says. "DMS would really like to raise $1,200 to purchase a ShelterBox to help with disaster relief."

The school plans to challenge the Rotary Club of Olds to match its donation. A ShelterBox rep is scheduled to address the Olds club later this week.

Later, Marilyn Pottage from the Rotary Club of Red Deer gave a presentation on ShelterBoxes to the leadership class and the school's Interact Club.
