As part of the agreement, families who will live in them provide "sweat equity" by helping to build the homes and/or doing at least 500 hours of community service. Mortgages are structured so that they will never exceed 30 per cent of each family's income.

Ashley Parker, marketing chair of Habitat for Humanity, Mountain View chapter, says it's expected the first of two families slated for the facility -- Brandy Hodgson her children Tyson and Taya Pratt -- will be able to move in to their new home by mid-December.

The duplex is located at 4826 52nd St., just north of the railway tracks.

"The duplex now has insulation and vapour barrier in both sides. The east side has been drywalled and is about to get tape and mud done either this week or early next," Parker said in an Oct. 26 email. "The siding is being put on both units this week."

Construction of fencing and front decks were also underway.

The duplex is being constructed with the help not only of many volunteers but also several local businesses.

Work on it began just after the August long weekend.
