Olds RCMP are continuing to investigate a spectacular crash on Highway 2 which left vehicle debris -- including the engine strewn across the highway.

The driver and lone occupant not only survived the single-vehicle collision, but was able to get out of the vehicle before emergency services arrived on the scene.

The collision occurred June 19 at about 12:38 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 2 at the Highway 27 overpass.

Police say the vehicle, a Saturn Vue, "left the highway, hitting the metal guard railing and peeling it off of its posts.

"The vehicle continued into the centre median wire barricade where it rolled numerous times leaving debris, including the engine, strewn across the scene and then came to rest in the median between the two wire barricades.

"The metal barricade which was hit landed across the two northbound lanes, causing two incidental collisions resulting in additional property damage but no additional injuries."

The driver was taken to Olds Hospital and Care Centre for injuries sustained in the collision.

"He was wearing his seatbelt, which held him within the engineered survivable space of the vehicle and contributed to the driver being able to extricate himself prior to emergency services arriving and ultimately surviving the crash," an RCMP news release says.

Road surface conditions and weather conditions were favourable for driving.

As they continue investigating, the accident, suspect speed and alcohol were "contributing factors" in the crash.
