OLDS — The question of what to do about too many stray animals and not enough shelter space for them is expected to come before the Town of Olds' council within the next few weeks.

During council’s March 10 meeting, a notice of motion on the matter from Coun. Darren Wilson was accepted by council.

The motion refers to the handling, rescuing, sheltering and/or housing of stray or abandoned dogs and cats.

“Currently, enforcement of animal control bylaw is impacted by the town’s lack of animal shelter facility,” a document regarding the notice of motion says.

The motion calls upon administrative staff to undertake a preliminary investigation to find out if there are any cost-effective ways for the Town of Olds to partner with existing or possibly new animal shelter providers to solve the problem.

A report on the matter with a recommendation on next steps to address the issue is expected to come back before council within six weeks.
