Emergency crews in Olds had a busy weekend, thanks to all the snow that fell.

They responded to several collisions that occurred on Highway 2 in the Olds vicinity.

The most spectacular series occurred Sunday morning and afternoon at or near the Highway 27 overpass.

In an email to the Albertan, fire Chief Justin Andrew said, "We were called out to a report of multiple vehicles involved at or near the Hwy. 27 overpass on the QE II."

"There were approximately 15 vehicles that had either left the roadway or were involved in a collision with other vehicles or the cable barrier fence."

Miraculously, there were no reported injuries.

The initial call to the scene came in at approximately 11:45 a.m. Fire crews were on scene until 2:30 p.m.

"Road conditions were extremely poor and traffic was slowed to a crawl for approximately one kilometre," Andrew says.

"Local tow trucks systematically removed vehicles from the scene to open up the normal flow of traffic and did an amazing job of being very efficient to get people back on the road and/or damaged vehicles removed from the highway," he adds.

Emergency crews were also called out to a three-vehicle collision on Highway 2 at the Highway 27 overpass on Saturday just before 5 p.m.

"Three vehicles collided at the overpass in the northbound lane, causing two of them to be seriously damaged," Andrew says.

Two people were taken by ambulance to the Olds Hospital and Care Centre with undetermined injuries. Traffic was detoured while the vehicles were removed from the scene.

Traffic was flowing again by 6 p.m.

Andrew says snow and icy conditions were the "root cause," of the weekend collisions.

"I can’t speak to people's actions or what the secondary cause was, but typically, poor driving habits in deteriorated conditions lead to these types of occurrences," he says.
