OLDS - About 150 Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD) students took part in a recent leadership conference in Olds, with the goal being to “provide participants with motivation, inspiration and information to make their schools a better place to live and learn,” division officials said in a release.
Hosted by the Ecole Olds High School (EOHS), the conference was attended by CESD students, as well as other students from neighbouring divisions.
The 11,700-student CESD is headquartered in Innisfail and includes schools across the district.
The one-day conference was for student leaders and their teacher advisors. It was arranged through the support of the Canadian Student Leadership Association.
“I love meeting new people and learning about activities that we can bring back with us,” said Sophia D, a Grade 12 EOHS student. “We live in a small town. It’s good to hear different perspectives.”
EOHS teacher Kevin Hronek called the conference valuable for student participants and their respective schools.
“Students leaders get to be with like-minded students, and pick up ideas and skills, and take those back to their own schools.”
Keynote speakers at the conference included Nadia Lady and Levi Stanford.
According to its website, the Canadian Student Leadership Association is a federally-registered charity originally founded in 1983 in order to support the continuation of the Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC).
It distributes leadership resources, materials, scholarships, and organizes programs and events for its member schools across the country.
