Olds council has approved a request by a cannabis production company to redesignate some of its land so it can expand its operations.

Sundial Growers Inc. is one of five cannabis production companies expected to set up shop in Olds.

The company is holding an official ribbon-cutting ceremony this Wednesday, Oct. 10 at its cultivation facilities at 6102 48 Ave. in the southeast industrial park.

Sundial received its licence from the federal government a few weeks ago and will be producing both medicinal and recreational marijuana.

Sundial is currently developing a facility on its north lot, which is adjacent to the lot that they are seeking to have redesignated.

The request was to have that 10.5-acre lot redesignated from light industrial district to direct control 7. That redesignation is required for the town to be able to accept an application for the development of a marijuana facility.

Plans call for that lot to house a medical marijuana facility with a micro grow room for research and experimentation.

A public hearing was required as a result of the request. That hearing moved along quickly, as no members of the public spoke out against or for the change.

A bylaw to grant that redesignation was then approved by council.
