Homegrown beef will go on sale next month at the annual Steer Show and Sale.
Eagle 4-H Beef and Multi Club is hosting the event on May 12 in the Cow Palace at the Olds Regional Exhibition. The show starts at 10 a.m. and the sale is at 7 p.m.
"What the show and sale is, is it shows how the kids have trained, groomed their animal over the course of their club year and then bring them out to show them off to everybody," said Connie Ness, an assistant leader of the local 4-H club.
The 4-H season lasts from October to May, Ness said. Steers will be judged on their overall appearance. Contestants will also be evaluated on their dress and ability to handle their animals, she continued.
Sixteen steers will be part of the show, Ness said.
Some were raised on farms since they were calves. Other club members buy animals at 227 kilograms and nurture them until they reach as heavy as 544 kilograms, Ness said.
Rosehill Auction Service will conduct the sale, where prospective buyers will bid on an animal at a price per pound. Proceeds go back to those who raised the animals to recoup the costs.
The cost of caring for a steer can include the price of feed, bedding and the animal itself. The average bill can be more than $1,000, Ness said.
"When you stop and think of it, the kids put all of this time and effort into it to raise a good animal and they don't come out in the long run making a whole lot of money," she said. "But it teaches kids how to manage money, manage their books because these kids have to do a record book with every animal they do."
That work and money spent culminates in the event next month, where members present the results of their efforts.
"Just showing the animals off and them being proud of what they've done, their accomplishments over the club year," Ness said.
