OLDS — May 2-8 has been proclaimed as Emergency Preparedness Week in Olds.
Emergency Preparedness Week has been held annually since 1996.
“The Town of Olds recognizes the importance of emergency preparedness in our community, and it is a great opportunity to highlight the work done by emergency management, fire, police, health, public works, emergency social services workers and volunteers,” Mayor Michael Muzychka said in a news release.
This year’s theme is 'Be Ready for Anything'. The intent of this theme is to encourage Canadians to become better prepared for the range of emergencies they could face.
Canadians are encouraged to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies: know the risks; make a plan; and get an emergency kit.
“Everyone has a role to play in an emergency. This week is an opportunity for our community to learn how to prepare and protect themselves, their families, and the community during any emergency situation” says acting director of emergency management Jennifer Lutz.
Alberta Emergency Alert is scheduled to conduct a test alert on May 5 at 1:55 p.m.
The purpose of that test is to make sure that alerts work when we need them – to save lives and protect Albertans during the event of an actual emergency.
The test alert will be sent through Alberta Emergency Alert and Alert Ready, Canada’s emergency alerting system, and will be distributed through radio, television, online, Twitter, Facebook and the Alberta Emergency Alert app.
A series of simple actions people can do to become more prepared in emergencies will be shared by the town via social media and on its website during the week.
