OLDS — Three big opportunities are planned this month to clean up the town and spur community spirit, a town news release says.
They are: Kick It to the Curb, a new event; Pick Up Garbage (PUG) Day, now in its eighth year; and a pop-up waste transfer station at the Olds Operations Centre. People will have to register for that one.
Kick It to the Curb
Kick It to the Curb will take place from Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12.
This is a way for people to set out in their front yard items they no longer need but that others might find useful.
The town says these items should be clearly marked with a sign indicating they’re free for others to take home.
“This new event allows community members to give their gently used items a second life,” the news release says.
The items you want to give away can be promoted on social media using the hashtag #OldsKickIt2024.
“We kindly ask that all items be cleaned up after the event concludes. For items that don't find a new home, consider donating to one of the many second-hand shops in Olds,” the release says.
Pick Up Garbage (PUG) Day
The eighth annual edition of this event, co-organized by the Olds Lions Club and town of Olds, will take place on Thursday, May 16 this year.
“We encourage everyone to arm themselves with a garbage bag and help pick up litter around our community,” the news release says. “Designated drop-off locations will be available for filled bags.”

“Please watch out for the many volunteers, minor sports teams, and clubs who are helping to make a difference in their neighbourhoods,” the release says.
Pop-up transfer station
This clean-up event will run from Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Olds Operations Centre, which is located along 70th Avenue, north of Highway 27.
Residents who register for this event will be able to drop by and dispose of regular household waste and hazardous household materials for free.
Examples of such waste are old paint, tires, batteries, aerosol cans and light bulbs.

This service is only available to Olds residents.
Hazardous household waste will only be accepted on Saturday and each household is limited to one level-truck bed of waste.
Registration (which as noted above, is required) can be submitted starting May 1 at www.olds.ca/springcleanup.
