Too early to say if Olds RCMP summer camp will be held

One of the officers who organized the first camp last year has been moved to another position so it's a question of whether he has the time to organize a camp this year, Olds RCMP commanding officer Staff Sgt. Warren Wright says

OLDS — It’s too early to say if another Olds RCMP academy – a chance for youth to find out what the RCMP is all about – will be held this year, says Staff Sgt. Warren Wright, Olds RCMP’s commanding officer.

The first ever Olds RCMP academy was held last June in École Olds Elementary School. It was modelled on a camp held previously by Three Hills RCMP.

Coun. James Cummings raised the question during council’s Feb. 24 meeting.

“Last year, you had the youth summer program, and it seemed to be very successful. Is that in the works for again this summer, to get the high school kids back in and introducing them to the RCMP life,” he asked.

“We had discussed it,” Wright said.

However, he noted that Cst. Mitch Price, the officer who organized it with help from Cst. Pablo Gargallo, has since been moved from his community resource officer position to a crime reduction unit, “so it's a matter of him finding the time to do it.”

Wright noted the camp was a great success.

“If we don't do it this year, chances are we'll do it in 2026, so we may just do it alternate years,” he said.
