Town gets some money from feds

The Town of Olds will receive some of the money it applied for from the federal government for projects to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday this year.

The town is receiving a total of $139,252 for two projects: Eye of the Lens Canada and upgrades to Centennial Park.

Last spring, Olds had applied for $35,000 for Eye of the Lens, a project under which pop-up photo booths would emerge in the town.

During an announcement on Friday, Jan. 20, the federal government announced it's providing that entire grant, all $35,000.

Through Eye of the Lens, residents will be asked to take self-portraits and share their stories about what Canada means to them. An art show would then take place in the winter.

However, the town apparently did not get all the money it wanted for proposed Centennial Park improvements.

Town officials had applied for $125,000 to install a permanent stage or an amphitheatre in Centennial Park.

They had also applied for a $150,000 grant to help cover costs to erect permanent Prairie village silhouettes in Centennial Park. Solar lights would also be installed along the pathway.

The federal government announced it's providing $104,252 to help cover costs for improvements to Centennial Park. But it did not specify which Centennial Park improvement projects were being approved.
