At approximately 9:40 p.m. on Jan. 21 Olds RCMP responded to a public complaint of a possible impaired driver, says Olds RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim McDonald.
A short time later an officer located the vehicle and determined that the male driver was wanted on outstanding warrants, he said.
Upon searching the vehicle police recovered what appeared to be fraudulent documents, including identification cards and licences, he said.
Police also recovered what is suspected to be heroin and fentanyl, he said.
“Through the course of the investigation a female passenger disclosed that she had been assaulted by the driver,” said McDonald.
Evan Mitchell Balchen, of Spruce Grove, also faces charges of unlawful possession of identity documents, possession of a controlled substance, and uttering threats.
He is being held in custody pending a Feb. 24 court appearance in Didsbury.
