During a meeting with Highways officials, Bowden town councillors expressed their concern about weeds coming into town from the highway.

BOWDEN - Councillors for the Town of Bowden got down in the weeds regarding a frustrating topic during the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) convention.

Mayor Robb Stuart says town councillors met with representatives of Alberta Transportation about the topic during the convention, held in Red Deer in late September.

"We met with (Alberta) Transportation because there are a lot of weeds coming into town from the highway and they said that's part of the contractors, that they're dealing with that."

Stuart says the unsightly weeds were a real problem this summer along the highways, adding in some cases they were "sticking up above the guardrails."

Stuart says the mostly dry summer was likely a factor in the height and prevalence of weeds along the highway but in any case, councillors wanted them dealt with.

Weeds can spread into the community.

"We've got more sow thistles in town than I've ever seen before," he says.
