Memberships of both the Olds-based Westview Co-op and Drumheller Co-op have approved a plan to merge the two into one entity.
During meetings last week, members of both organizations voted in favour of a proposal to merge the two co-ops. The Olds membership voted 98.6 per cent in favour. The approval rate in Drumheller was 86.4 per cent.
"Effective Feb. 5, 2018, the new organization will operate as Westview Co-operative Association Limited," a Westview Co-op news release says.
During an earlier interview with the Albertan, Westview Co-op general manager Dennis Laing said no current Olds workers will lose employment as a result of the merger, although their jobs may change.
The Co-op says the merger will be advantageous for members.
"Members will have the convenience of using one co-op number while shopping at 12 locations in six communities (Carstairs, Drumheller, Eagle Hill, Linden, Olds and Sundre) in a trading area encompassing approximately 10,000 square kilometres," the news release says.
"The possibilities and opportunities for the new co-op are endless and the future looks bright for members of our co-op."
