TORONTO — A 16-year-old boy shot by Toronto police during a traffic stop has died in hospital, Ontario's police watchdog said Tuesday.
The Special Investigations Unit said the teen is from Toronto but did not release his name. It initially referred to him as a man in a news release issued on Monday.
The SIU said police stopped a car near Sheppard Avenue and Bathurst Street at around 11 p.m. on Sunday night for a traffic infraction.
There was an "exchange of gunfire" during which two officers fired their guns and the teen was struck, the watchdog said.
"Based on a review of body worn camera footage, the male who was shot is the individual who shot at police," an SIU spokesperson wrote in an email to The Canadian Press.
Kristy Denette also wrote that six people were inside the stopped vehicle, including the teen shot by police, and "what's believed to have been a firearm" was recovered from the scene.
Police had previously said no officers were injured.
Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU said, and an autopsy is being scheduled.
