TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Home sales

The Canadian Real Estate Association is expected to release its home sales figures for December on Monday. The figures will offer a picture of how home sales ended in a year that saw higher interest rates increase the cost of mortgages for homebuyers.

Bank of Canada report

The Bank of Canada will release its business outlook survey and Canadian survey of consumer expectations on Monday morning. The reports come ahead of the central bank's next interest rate decision and monetary policy report that are scheduled for Jan. 25. 

Housing starts

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. will release housing starts for December on Tuesday. The national housing agency reported the  seasonally adjusted annual rate for housing starts in November was 264,159 units, down 0.2 per cent from October.

Inflation

Statistics Canada will release its latest reading for inflation on Tuesday when it publishes its consumer price index for December. The annual pace of inflation eased to 6.8 per cent in November following a reading of 6.9 per cent in October.

Other economic data

Statistics Canada will release a trio of reports this week that will help paint a picture of how the economy fared in November. The agency will release its monthly survey of manufacturing for November on Monday, followed by wholesale trade figures for the month on Thursday and retail sales numbers on Friday.
