TORONTO — Jockey Patrick Husbands, who rode Canada's last Triple Crown winner, topped the '24 class named for induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame on Wednesday.
Husbands, 50, guided Wando to a sweep of the Canadian Triple Crown in 2003 for owner Gustav Schickedanz and trainer Mike Keogh. Wando, Schickedanz and Keogh all preceded Husbands into the Hall of Fame.
Husbands, a resident of Brampton, Ont., is a three-time winner of the $1-million King's Plate and has been named Canada's top rider seven times. He has recorded 3,632 career wins (and counting).
The other thoroughbred inductees include horses Starship Jubilee and Channel Maker, trainer Danny Vella, builder Glen Todd and veteran Richard Grubb.
Driver Sylvain Filion, of Angers, Que., tops the list of standardbred inductees. Last October, Filion became the first Canadian-based driver in harness-racing history to reach 10,000 career wins.
He achieved the historic victory by driving One More Bet, a two-year-old pacing filly, to a five-length win at Woodbine Mohawk Park in 1:52.3 at 3-1 odds.
Also named for induction were late driver Ed Tracey, Dr. Moira Gunn (builder), horse Bee a Magician, trainer Dr. Ian Moore and veteran Ross (Cowboy) Curran.
The induction ceremony will be held Aug. 7.
