TORONTO — Environment Canada is warning of a sharp cold front passing through Ontario on Wednesday, saying it is expected to dramatically shift weather conditions in most parts of the province.
The weather agency has issued flash freeze warnings for several municipalities near Ottawa in the east and a snow squall warning for Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., in the northwest as the front moves across the province.
It says Sault Ste. Marie could see up to 15 centimetres of snow in the afternoon, while wet areas will quickly turn icy in the Ottawa area, creating dangerous walking and driving conditions.
Environment Canada says above-zero temperatures in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area in southern Ontario are forecast to suddenly drop to -2 C in the afternoon due to the cold front.
Along with icy conditions, residents in the south can also expect winds gusting up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Environment Canada has also issued extreme cold warnings for Attawapiskat, Peawanuck and Fort Severn, some of Ontario's most northern communities, as temperatures will feel like -45 C with wind chill Wednesday afternoon.
