As the years go by, military conflict and its consequences -- fatalities and severe injuries -- can fade amongst the population as a whole.

But we cannot let that happen.

The consequences of war are all too real.

Many of those who fight on our behalf lose their lives or come back home severely injured -- physically and/or mentally, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, from which they may never really recover.

The families and friends of those veterans are just as severely affected, as they see their loved one suffer and can often do little to help them heal.

On an international level, as the saying goes, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

It's a terrifying time as U.S. president Donald Trump picks fights with Iran and downplays the importance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and we see the Taliban regaining ground in Afghanistan.

More than ever, we need to be on our guard and ensure our military is ready to respond to the threats posed by goings-on around the world.

We also need to honour and pay proper respect to those who have fought to protect us and preserve our freedoms.

So this Sunday, please attend the Remembrance Day services in the Ralph Klein Centre.

Show that you care, and you're grateful for all that our veterans have done for us.
