Caring about democracy

Referring to the article “Centre of the storm,” published in the Innisfail Province on Dec. 6, I ask my fellow Innisfail citizens -- is this a new storm? I don't think so. It seems to me to be a spin-repeat cycle.

I am thinking back to when the residents of Westwood Court and I fought against moving the waste site into our backyard.

The language sounds very familiar -- stop going through the press, fight for information, these tough decisions have to be made, and so on. This current council seems to want to defend its bureaucrats at any cost.

I think it's always best to have a good staff; however, this democratic government (which is defined as “in which power is vested in the people”) appears to want to ignore its people, and not only ignore us, but keep us all in the dark.

Don't do it through the papers? Absurd. Every person has the right to speak out, to share their thoughts publicly. I thought the Dark Ages had wrapped up. Why is this council so afraid of public discussion? Is it because they have something to hide? Are there hidden motivations? Have they forgotten, or do they even understand or care about democracy?

This current democratically-elected council appears to rely so heavily on its staff for what seems all of its decisions. Why don't we elect the CAO, the planners and all the rest of the staff and cut out the middleman?

Speaking of elections, the next municipal election is in about 11 months.

I will not forget these words and actions. I will act in my loudest voice and vote.
