Council stands firmly behind Helen Dietz

We heard on Nov. 28 that a group of citizens is concerned with the town's hiring and dismissal practices, and what was referred to as “misconduct” of CAO Helen Dietz.

We heard on Nov. 28 that a group of citizens is concerned with the town's hiring and dismissal practices, and what was referred to as “misconduct” of CAO Helen Dietz.

We thank the group's members for sharing their concerns in a respectful and constructive manner.

As was stated during the meeting, council stands firmly behind Dietz, and continues to support her very capable management of the municipality.

I assure that we're apprised and consulted in every major decision she makes, and have the utmost confidence in her abilities to lead Innisfail forward.

It's worth noting that the town is in an excellent financial position and has in excess of $12 million in reserves — thanks in large part to Dietz's prudent leadership.

While we're bound by strict regulations when it comes to discussing labour issues, I can say that the hiring-and-firing-at-will mentality that's been alleged is simply not true.

Staff turnover costs money; bringing a new person on board or letting someone go is done only if it's deemed unequivocally to be in the best interest of the municipality.

In our commitment to integrity, diligence and fiscal responsibility, council adheres to this sentiment strongly.

Nonetheless, we take very seriously concerns such as those raised on Monday. We'll be following up on them accordingly.
