Creating open-space public venue a worthy investment

Given a reason to, people are far more likely to visit a location that might otherwise not have interested them.

While Sundre’s Greenwood Campground, located on the west side of the Red Deer River south of Highway 27, is already an appealing amenity that draws out numerous campers every summer, the municipality has been developing plans to foster further interest by designing an open-space, park-like public venue complete with gazebo.

The goal is to year-round cater to all kinds of uses — from providing a more iconic and welcoming picnic area for the public to private functions such as weddings, as well as outdoor music festivals for the community.

Administration has been working with architectural designers to draft some drawings for a final style that was selected as a favourite by more than 200 people who responded to a recent survey, as well as updating council on the progress to date.

While plans are moving along, the structure most likely will not be constructed until next year, despite earlier optimistic projections that the gazebo could be in place before the end of 2018.

Perhaps that’s for the better — ensuring every t has been crossed and i dotted before rushing forward sounds sensible.

Certain discussions, such as what a rental fee structure would resemble, remain to be had.

But the momentum seems to be moving forward.

Of course as with any project that involves funding from the public’s taxes — a substantial donation commitment from West Fraser will also help to make the project a reality — some people might question the cost of the investment. Yet the potential return on this investment is hard to argue against.

From private functions such as family reunions to public events like outdoor theatre productions, the gazebo could quite possibly tap into a neglected local market that draws out not only residents but visitors as well, who in turn are likely to venture around nearby businesses, creating crucial spinoff economic activity.

The Greenwood Campground is already a gem nestled right next to Sundre’s downtown core with a picturesque view of the river. And the gazebo, once completed, will serve to not only enhance but also create new opportunities for the already popular destination.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition, and hope new events such as outdoor music festivals become staples in the community.
