Going beyond superheroes

The new Avengers movie is finally out – Avengers: Infinity War features approximately 108 heroes fighting Thanos and his Infinity stones, not to be confused with the Rolling Stones -- but that will have to wait.

The new Avengers movie is finally out – Avengers: Infinity War features approximately 108 heroes fighting Thanos and his Infinity stones, not to be confused with the Rolling Stones -- but that will have to wait. This week's column is about what's on television these days.

Oh yes, there are superhero shows aplenty. Gotham is hitting its stride. The Batman before Batman show is really leaning into the crazy and it's paying off with some good humour and some great action. Jessica Jones just wrapped up Season 2 on Netflix and although not as good as Season 1 -- Kilgrave is tough to beat as a villain --  it's still entertaining. New Netflix hero show Black Lightning has been electrically entertaining -- it's about a school principal with a secret identity trying to save his town from a notorious gang.

I had to pick up HBO for the spring to check out Westworld Season 2. The first season was amazing. It's about a Fantasy Island-style theme park with robots. It really takes a deep, dark look at what's real, what's imagined, what we remember. Season 2 so far, looks just as good.

Legion on FX is also just starting its second season. It tackles many of the same metaphysical themes of what is reality. Legion is about a super-powerful mutant telepath who battles demons.

As for Netflix, I caught Dark recently. A Stranger Things style show about weird things happening in a small town and kids exploring caves. Sounds like Stranger Things but it's much darker. Being in German with dubbed English, it can be a little startling at first but you get used to it.

Everything Sucks is a newer show about kids growing up in the '90s. It's like Stranger Things without the stranger things. The second season of Santa Clarita Diet, the zombie housewife show, is just as funny as the first. Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore are both hilarious.

As for regular old network television, there are plenty of great shows out there. I've been trying to catch up on The Good Place after seeing it lately. It is really funny. Ted Danson as a supernatural angel type in the after world and it's just goofy. Although I would take issue with Global saying you can watch full seasons On Demand, because often I can only find the last two or three episodes of a show. Very infuriating when you are paying so much for cable.

Ah well, let's not forget the hilarious Brooklyn 99. The funny cop show with a large ensemble cast led by Andy Samberg and Terry Crews. That show just gets better and better each season. Lastly, the Goldbergs is a great show about a family growing up in the '80s. As dysfunctional as they appear, they always stick up for each other and a lesson is learned by the end of each episode.

I think that's enough TV for today. Time to head outside and enjoy this nice spring weather while it lasts.
